In June 2019 I had my degree show, this is where we show our work from our major project that we have been working on throughout this academic year (Sep 18 to May 19). Mine was on Canal and Life. Here is images of what it looked like on the exhibition.
‘Canal and River Life’
Water is the basis of all life forms – both plant and animal. We live on an island and there are more than 2,000 miles of rivers and canals that traverse our island. Rivers and canals drain the land, act as transport routes and bring pleasure to many people who live on the waterways. These are the people who are represented in my exhibition and they would like to show you a glimpse of their life. So, welcome aboard and enjoy your look at the world of Canal and River Boat Life.
My photos reflect the life of canal-boat dwellers on the canals and rivers of the East Midlands. I travelled and visited these waterways and built up working relationships with all the people shown here. They were open and willing to show me their ‘homes’, they welcomed me and were proud to talk about their lifestyle and how they were still connected to the modern world (they all had internet connections). I am also proud to have been able to capture snapshots of this world and these people are now my friends. Enjoy seeing how they live and hearing their stories.
There was a competition that was being held at the degree show and the title was 'Looking through the persons soul who is being photographed' and i won it!! Here is the artist statement for the winning image.
This image is part of a sequence called ‘Canal and River Life’, which is the theme for my photographic exhibition. All my images were connected by a central theme about the people and animals who live on and alongside the rivers and canals of the East Midlands. This image shows Dave and his life-long companion Rufus the Terrier, who live on a canal boat near to Loughborough. Both Dave and Rufus seem completely at ease with their surroundings and give an impression of deep friendship, contentment and affinity with their lifestyle. It is these positive qualities and the overall sense of self-fulfilment shining through the photograph that meets the requirements of the Rachel Stevens Award.
